Outreach and Education
A key part of the Save Our Children’s Sight/EyeMobile program is educating parents and teachers on the importance of vision care. We make the effort to follow-up with high-risk children and their families by continuing to monitor their visual acuity once glasses are prescribed. Shiley staff also coordinate follow-up care with pediatric ophthalmologists, when required, scheduling appointments and even coordinating surgery and follow-up appointments, if needed. This successful and compelling program has been embraced by the community.

Volunteers
UC San Diego undergraduate, graduate, medical students and interns, as well as students from medical schools around the country, have been integrally involved in the Save Our Children’s Sight/EyeMobile program. Since 2000 over 80 UC San Diego undergraduates alone have made a commitment to volunteer for 10 hours per week for two-quarters, contributing over 8,000 hours of enthusiastic student commitment.

“My time with Save Our Children’s Sight has fully confirmed my commitment to medicine. This combination of medicine, research, humanity and serving those in need have made it clear that becoming a physician is what is right for me.”
Eva (Class of 2009)
