Research
2008 also saw research publications and presentations at national meetings regarding patterns of eye disease and the impact of early intervention with glasses on the cognitive and social functioning of young children. We found that preschool children who were farsighted and/or had astigmatism, compared to matched classmates without these conditions, were significantly disadvantaged on tests of visual motor function. After wearing glasses for 6 weeks, the disadvantaged children reached the normal level on this test that is highly predictive of future learning, especially reading. And this improvement after wearing glasses was not due to vision alone since both groups did equally well on tasks that required only vision. The results suggest that early identification and correction of these conditions should optimize the cognitive development and learning of these young underserved children.
This year, the Save Our Children’s Sight/EyeMobile program was fortunate to receive coverage in over 100 media outlets including: Forbes.com, Businessweek.com, the Canadian Press, Washingtonpost.com, US Health and World News Report, CBS Palm Springs, ABC San Francisco, ABC Chicago, ABC Los Angeles, Science Daily, Healthfinder.gov, Newswise, and many others. In addition, the program was nominated for the 2008 American Hospital Association National Community Service Award.
