Last week I noticed a significant reduction in my vision. I grew concerned when my long time opthomologist said I needed to see a Retinal Specialist immediately. As I had just chenged my insurance carriers I was at a loss on what to do.

I visited the ED at Thornton Hospital in La Jolla and with a minimal of wait they sent me over to Shiley Eye Center which is just a short ride from Thornton. I immediately saw an Ophthalmologist who ran many more detailed test and discovered a significant problem in my right eye. A problem that is not handled and cared for asap could meant the permanent loss of vision.

However, there was a paperwork problem. On the same day the Department Business Manager, Mr. Edwin Kofler sat down with me and said he would do everything he possibley could to clear up the situation and find a specialist to see me and treat me asap. Being this was in the middle of Christmas and New Years it would take Mr. Kofler and the Doctor (Dr. Nudleman) fast and compassionate effort to help me.

And that is what they did. Mr. Kofler cleared up my problem and the Dr. made time and I was squeezed in for a significant retinal treatment. Though my problem has not totally cleared up yet (i will write a review when my vision is back to normal), I know I am being well cared for.

I want to thank all the folks at Shiley, especially Mr. Kofler and the entire medical staff at Shiley and Thornton for taking time during their busy schedule during the Holidays to compassionitely help me with my very serious medical issue. Too bad there are only five stars I can give them.

This is a world class teaching hospital with the best eye doctors. You may need to wait but it is worth the treatment you receive with top people in their field. Just know if you have an emergency they will treat you right away and that may cause a delay for people in line to see the physicians. When you are the emergency you are so grateful that this place is able to perform high tech laser surgery in moments to save your sight. People travel from around the world to get treatment here and locals can just drive here so we are fortunate in San Diego to have Shiley Eye Institute so close.

I bring a sibling of mine here often. Every time we come here, the Dr. takes care of business, does the treatment and gives us the next appointment. The Operating Room staff is incredibly kind. You can truly tell they work as a team and care about patient comfort and make sure the patient's truly ready for their surgery before proceeding.

Dr. Afshari how do I thank you and your team? In late 2013 (age 53) I was diagnosed with an advanced cataract in my right eye. Between now and then you have endured my many questions with genuine concern and patience. Today both of my cataracts have been removed and I am OVER THE MOON with the results. The entire staff (front and back) are kind and professional. Any wait time was trivial and inconsequential as the environment is calm and peaceful. Oh, and did I mention how grateful I feel every time I visit that I am blessed to have access to this level of care? I challenge anyone who may be concerned with wait times or any other trivial matter to remember that your vision is why you are there. It isn't a nail salon. You have access to THE most advanced technology, the most experienced physicians and an environment that exudes authentic patient empathy. Blessed, grateful and a forever fan of The Shiley Eye Institute.

Last year, (2015) I was diagnosed with a hole in my retina, (left eye), as well as a cataract. Dr. William Freeman was the retinologist who performed the vitrectomy and Dr.Natalie Afshari performed the cataract surgery. I could not have asked for better care. I have been seen at both the retinology department, the Jacob retina/imaging center, the ophthalmology department, and in the surgical center, and have had nothing but positive experiences. Because of these positive experiences, I have decided to receive all of my medical care at UCSD Health Care Center.

I selected a retina specialist at Shiley Eye Center after a poor outcome elsewhere on my first cataract surgery. I have nothing but praise for the doctors and staff at Shiley. They monitored that eye for several years and also completed my second cataract surgery without a hiccup. In particular I recommend Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Ferreyra. They have different specialties and both do excellent work.

My daughter, who is 20 suddenly lost the vision in one eye. She was terrified and, as her parents 2500 miles away in Pennsylvania, so were we. She saw Dr. Goldbaum and put us on speakerphone so we could also talk to him after he examined her. Dr. Goldbaum was so knowledgable, calm and helpful it made a scary situation very manageable. His assistant, Debbie is one of the kindest, most helpful people I have come in contact with. I feel like they both gave more than anyone would expect and helped our daughter to recover some of her eyesight.

I had a wandering eye which I had been dealing with for quite some time, and I couldn't be more pleased with the results of the surgery by Dr. David Granet and the support from the staff. I went from having zero depth perception to within a few degrees of normal. It feels like a miracle! They were very thorough with all the exams to determine what should be done, and Dr. Granet was patient, kind and very happy to answer all my questions thoroughly. One of his nursed took the time to really go over the recovery process and gave me some good tips on how to make that go smoothly. They told me ahead of time that their office plays an active part in training students from UCSD who are becoming doctors, so because of that there were always interns with Dr. Granet, and they also did some of the testing before the regular staff did testing. Dr. Granet seems highly intelligent and I know he has invented some of the current surgical techniques used in eye surgeries, so I was happy to see that he is sharing his knowledge with the next generation.

Dr. Heichel saw my mother in law last month while she was in town visiting. The Shiley staff was extremely efficient in getting her scheduled for a same week appointment due to the fact that she was returning home to Venezuela the following week. After my mother in law was examined, Dr. Heichel explained that sometimes the capsule that holds the artificial lens becomes cloudy after cataract surgery. This issue is what was causing her vision problems. Even though she was only scheduled for an exam slot, Dr. Heichel made time in his full schedule that day to perform the laser procedure to clear her eyes as he knew she would not be able to have the procedure done once she returned to Venezuela. The morning following her procedure she was reading without difficulty which she had not been able to do for as long as she can remember. I just wanted Dr. Heichel and his staff to know that there is a little Venezuelan grandmother who is gushing about him in her home town. She has told all her friends about her "HERO" who used his knowledge and expertise to help her. She has told everyone she knows about this man who took the time in his already busy day to literally heal her. Thank you Dr. Heichel and staff for a job well done.

I had cataracts - my world in a blur. Had to get them fixed. I knew the Shiley Eye Center would be the place to go. My physician had to give me a reference to get me there. When I called, the very kind and fun person on the phone asked me if my doctor told me which physician I should see. "Sure", I said - "the best one".

She made an appointment with Dr. Robert Weinreb. Great - off I went totally afraid and not looking forward to the experience at all. Dr. Weinreb and his amazing team took away my fear. After all the tests and drops, etc. no pain. Wow, maybe this won't hurt. That was true. What an experience. It was like going from black and white to technicolor! So helpful and well organized. Two weeks later, both eyes fixed. 20-20 vision. Perfection. Thank you Dr. Weinreb and your remarkable team at The Shiley Eye Center.

I have been a patient of Dr. Weinreb and the Shiley Eye Institute for 20 years. I know that my sight was on the decline before becoming a patient of the Shiley and that by now, had I not been a patient of Dr. Weinreb my sight would be extremely impaired or quite possibly I would be blind. I had surgeries (Trabeculectomy and cataracts, both eyes), both needed to stabilize by sight. That has been 10 years or more ago. I have not had any difficulties during or after any of theses procedures and most importantly I CAN SEE!! The staff is friendly and professional and Dr. Weinreb is the very best in his field. I think we are really fortunate to have one of the outstanding clinics in the world here in San Diego. I would recommend the Shiley to anyone who has difficulty with their sight and especially if you have glaucoma. See Dr. Weinreb. You will not regret your choice.

I have been a patient of Dr. Weinreb and Shiley Eye Institute for 15 years. We found that my particular type of glaucoma couldn't be treated with eye drops, so together with Dr. Weinreb, I made the decision to have a Trabeculectomy to help control the pressure and save my eyesight. The surgery in my case was high risk, but I couldn't have been more confident with the treatment and recovery because of Dr. Weinreb and his staff. That surgery was 12 years ago and to this day, my eye pressure remains in check and my eye health is great. I believe whole-heartedly that Dr. Weinreb saved my eyesight.

I also would like to mention how well run the clinic is. The front desk is efficient and all of the assistants and fellows are friendly, caring, professional and extremely knowledgeable. Unlike most doctors offices and clinics, I have never had to wait longer than 10 minutes within my appointment time. I can't imagine trusting anyone other than Dr. Weinreb and the excellent staff at Shiley Eye Institute with my Glaucoma or any of my eye health needs.

I am writing this review following cataract surgery performed by Dr. Weinreb and his team at Shiley Eye Institute on September 19, 2016. At my initial consultation visit, Dr. Weinreb and his staff were extremely accommodating, allowing me to complete all preoperative requirements that day and scheduling me for surgery the following Monday. The nurses who prepped me for surgery were very professional and reassuring. The Anesthesiologist took care of my anxiety with a sedative. The procedure went very smoothly and quickly! Dr. Weinreb spoke to my wife after the surgery letting her know everything went well. I appreciated that courtesy very much. Post op instructions were very clear and easy to understand. I had minimal discomfort, which was easily relieved with Tylenol. I reported the next day to Dr. Weinreb for follow up and was told the new lens looked "perfect" and my vision in the operated eye was 20/20! I was ecstatic! I returned one week later with the same findings. I can now see things much clearer, especially my music when playing the keyboard! THANK YOU DR. WEINREB for restoring my sight and for your compassion and professionalism.

Shiley is the place to go for eye issues. This is a teaching clinic and my husband and I have been treated wonderfully by Dr. Brown, Dr. Goldbaum and Dr. Weinreb who are masters in their field. The staff, fellows, techs we met are all very kind aware people who give good service. I want to share my husband came in recently for a check-up to find he needed emergency procedure. We are both so grateful for the expert intervention. Sometimes there may be a wait but keep in mind someone ahead maybe taking up more time than expected while the Doctors and their team are saving their sight. My husband had to have his retina reattached. While we understand other people must have had their appointment delayed, only when you are in an emergency can you understand what might be happening beyond the schedules control. We trust the doctors here completely. After our experiences at Shiley, we find them to be the very best. We want to thank all the good doctors and all people at Shiley for your great care!

I recently had my cataract surgery at Shiley Eye Institute. Dr. Weinreb and his team performed outstanding surgeries on both my eyes in January (two weeks apart). My post-procedural exam shows that I now have 20/20 corrected vision. I was a technically challenging patient for cataract surgeries because I was extremely myopic (+9.0) and was diagnosed of Glaucoma. Dr. Weinreb did a superb job and my eyes healed perfectly while my Glaucoma remains under control without any complication. I am so grateful to Dr. Weinreb and his team for giving me back my vision. It is no exaggeration to say that the procedures really changed my life: Before the procedures, I was legally blind without my heavy prescription glasses; now I can write and read without glasses and my nearsightedness had been significantly corrected to +1.5. With its unique combination of cutting edge research on surgical techniques, state of art facilities, and top notch ophthalmologists and optometrists, Shiley Eye Institute provides the highest quality clinical care to patients with eye disorders. My husband and I are long-term patients at Shiley Eye Institute. We feel so fortunate to have such an outstanding eye center located in our home town.

After a long eight years of inaccurate and inadequate diagnosis and treatment by other well-known doctors in Los Angeles area that had led to worsening of my eyes' condition, I saw Dr. Weinreb late last year and since then I have been his patient. It was only by a coincidence, that I realized the necessity to get a second and possibly third opinion about the condition of my eyes and the required treatment. I started my search on the web and tried to find the best doctors in this field in California and possibly Western US. I first saw other well-known doctors in Los Angeles who confirmed my fear that I needed a surgery as soon as possible. Then I saw Dr. Weinreb and I found him to be straight forward, sincere and extremely caring. In my first visit, I could feel his sadness and frustration at my acting so late in getting the correct diagnosis and the appropriate treatment. Everything that he told me in that visit convinced me that I could trust him completely with my eyes. Throughout the past few months that he performed the two surgeries, one on each eye. I was amazed by the care and the personal attention that every patient was receiving at Shiley Eye Institute from Dr. Weinreb, his staff and his team of fellow doctors. My two sisters and my niece who had accompanied me to the surgery room and also to the office visits with Dr. Weinreb were so profoundly impressed by his expertise, his caring, and his bedside manner that have not stopped talking to others about their observations at Shiley Eye Institute. I am convinced that I owe my vision to Dr. Weinreb and his world recognized expertise. I just hope that other people doubting their current doctors would get a second opinion from Dr. Weinreb. I believe that this will be a visit that will have a significant impact on their lives.

Absolutely wonderful and amazing doctor! He diagnosed and treated my problem when several other specialists were clueless. So lucky to have been referred to him by my ophthalmologist. Previous surgeries were unsuccessful. His surgery worked and let me see again. Caring and patient, he saw me at night and also on the weekend when I needed to be see for discomfort and irritation. Also treated my sister who had another type of glaucoma. Same story - saved her from the misery that I had endured over several years with other doctors. Although there can be a wait in the clinic, it is because patients are referred from everywhere (I mean everywhere) to him. Waiting room is filled with individuals who have similar stories as mine. His team is also wonderful and highly skilled and to be commended highly. Not surprised that my doctor said "Dr. W is the absolute best" when he referred me.
