COVID-19 Updates

Providing You Safe and Responsible Care

The doctors and staff of the Shiley Eye Institute and Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology at UC San Diego Health remain committed to our patients’ well-being and safety during this COVID-19 pandemic. If you need to come to Shiley, be assured we are following UC San Diego Health screening guidelines, social distancing and strict cleaning protocols within the clinic.

Patient Safety Initiatives

The health and safety of our patients and staff is our highest priority. While some of these measures may pose an inconvenience, we appreciate your understanding and thank you for your assistance.


  • The facility including exam rooms are cleaned & disinfected more frequently.
  • Upon entry into the facility, each patient will be asked a series of health screening questions.
  • For patient safety, physicians & healthcare personnel will be wearing masks, continually wash hands & social distancing when possible.
  • We practice social distancing in our facility.
  • There is a one-way path of travel going into / entering and out / exiting the building.
  • We have removed magazines and shared items from the waiting areas in the lobbies.
  • To accommodate social distancing in the lobby, please arrive no sooner than 15 minutes prior to appointment.
  • Patient will be able to wait outside or in their vehicle prior to appointment.
  • UC San Diego Health has mandated (in accordance with state & local policy) that all patients & healthcare workers wear a mask – Shiley will provide patients with a mask if they arrive without one; the mask is to stay on for the entire visit.
  • We have added clear plastic barriers to reduce contact in registration areas.
