The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) division of Glaucoma offers a one-year AUPO certified fellowship for glaucoma management and surgery. Clinical experience consists of participation in the glaucoma faculty clinics at the Shiley Eye Institute, as well as independent patient care provided in the Fellows’ own Glaucoma clinic also at the Shiley Eye Institute. Fellows will gain surgical experience by performing independent and supervised surgery, assisting faculty preceptors, and supervising resident surgical cases. Fellows also will supervise patient care and perform surgery at the Glaucoma Clinic of the Department of Veteran Affairs Healthcare Center on campus, as well as at the Glaucoma Clinic of UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. The fellow will be exposed to glaucoma surgical procedures, including, but not limited to:
Knowledge and experience of glaucoma diagnostics also will be instilled. The Imaging Unit at the Hamilton Glaucoma Center is the most technologically sophisticated and well-equipped in the world. Our renowned translational science laboratories and faculty investigators also are accessible for project planning and research.
The Fellow will hold an official appointment in the UCSD Department of Ophthalmology as a Clinical Instructor. Fellows also are expected to actively participate in teaching activities in the Department of Ophthalmology. The Glaucoma division has quarterly journal clubs, weekly resident/fellow teaching conferences and weekly Departmental Grand Rounds presentations throughout the year. The fellow will work closely with the residents assigned to the Glaucoma service. In addition to clinical and surgical experiences, all Fellows are expected to participate in clinical or basic science research and to present findings at local, regional and national meetings. Excellent support with clinical trials and laboratory science, as well as biostatistics are available.
Applicants for fellowship training in Glaucoma who have completed ACGME residency in the US must register for the Ophthalmology Fellowship Match online (www.sfmatch.org) by submitting the required application, and supplemental materials listed therein. The deadline for this process is September 15 of the year prior to the start of the desired fellowship-training year. The fellow must be eligible for a California Medical License, as medical licensure from the California Medical Board is required (www.mbc.ca.gov)
International application for glaucoma fellowship only is submitted by invitation. Please contact Allison Price Bishop at ajprice(at)ucsd.edu for additional information.
