Imaging in early detection and monitoring of the disease, Angle-closure glaucoma diagnosis, and treatment
Sasan Moghimi, MD, is clinician-scientist working at San Diego Shiley Eye Institute, UC San Diego as Professor of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Moghimi has an active clinical practice managing adult glaucoma patients and complex cataract surgeries. Dr. Moghimi’s clinical focus is glaucoma including angle closure glaucoma. He is the director of myopia and glaucoma clinic with complex diagnostic and management cases.
Dr. Moghimi has served as Principal Investigator on numerous funded awards, including NIH R01 and UC Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program grants. His research focuses on functional and structural measurements for optimizing diagnosis of glaucoma or its progression with a focus in advanced glaucoma, use of artificial intelligence approaches in glaucoma diagnostics including OCTA, lifestyle and glaucoma, and study of angle closure disease. In his lab, he has mentored several postdoctoral researchers, fellows, and trainees, many of whom are now successfully advancing their own careers in translational and clinical research, continuing to contribute meaningfully to ophthalmology and vision science.
Dr. Moghimi is a clinician-scientist who continues to teach and publish extensively. He has several educational awards including outstanding Clinical Teaching Award. He has co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters related to glaucoma and vision science. He is an editorial board member of many ophthalmology journals including Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and International Glaucoma Review.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, he was a professor and vice chair at Farabi Eye Hospital at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Dr. Moghimi completed fellowships in glaucoma at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and UCSF School of Medicine. He completed residency training in ophthalmology and earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
