Shagun Bhatia, MD

Shagun Bhatia, MD is a pediatric ophthalmologist and Section Chief of Ophthalmology at Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego. She is an Assistant Professor in the Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California San Diego.

Dr. Bhatia specializes in comprehensive pediatric ophthalmology, including strabismus, amblyopia, and retinopathy of prematurity. She provides both surgical and non-surgical treatment and is passionate about delivering family-centered care to children.

Dr. Bhatia earned her medical degree and Master of Science in Clinical Research from Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and her fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Institute. She has received several honors and research awards, including the NIH/ACTSI TL1 Pre-doctoral Research Training Award and a Research to Prevent Blindness Pilot Research Grant.

Dr. Bhatia’s research interests focus on retinopathy of prematurity, with an emphasis on improving the accessibility, efficiency, and equity of ROP screening and care. She is actively involved in medical education and mentorship of fellows, residents, and medical students and is committed to advancing the quality of pediatric ophthalmic care.
