UCSD Shiley EyeMobile for Children

Each year more than 100,000 American children needlessly go blind, simply because they did not receive an eye exam.

It is our mission to give young low-income children the vision they need to succeed in school and in life by identifying, treating and preventing vision disorders through:

  • Vision Screening
  • The EyeMobile for Children
  • Outreach and Education
  • Early Child Development Research

Save Our Children's Sight is a model program at the UCSD Shiley Eye Institute removing the barriers to vision care faced by underserved young children and their families.

2000 - 2020 Cumulatively

  • 236,085 Vision Screenings
  • 31,683 Comprehensive Dilated Eye Exams
  • 940 High-Risk Children Detected
  • 13,461 Free Glasses Given

2019 - 2020 // 10,601 Children Seen

  • 8,803 Vision Screenings by Auto-Refractor
  • 990 Comprehensive Dilated Eye Exams
  • 48 High-Risk Children Detected
  • 760 Free Prescription Glasses Given

This program has been made possible by the contributions of generous community members. These donations have allowed for the tremendous growth of the EyeMobile Program since it was founded. With your help, we can continue to expand our program and provide services to a greater number of children in San Diego County.
