Lanning B. Kline, M.D., is currently Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology in the Neuro-ophthalmology Division at the Shiley Eye Institute and Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology, UC San Diego.
Dr. Kline is a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He attended medical school at Duke University and completed an ophthalmology residency at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was a fellow in neuro-ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, Florida.
He formerly served as Professor and Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama from 1998 to 2011. He was a professor of ophthalmology and an associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery since 1990. He held the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology from 2000 to 2011.
Dr. Kline is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a fellow of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and the American College of Surgeons. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, as well as textbooks and monographs dealing with neuro-ophthalmology. Dr. Kline was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology from 2010 – 2018 and currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a recipient of a Life Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
