Dr Borooah completed medical school at Imperial College in London and gained a postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine before completing his Ophthalmology residency. He also undertook two retinal fellowships, including prestigious training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
He is the principal investigator on several groundbreaking clinical trials including those for dry age-related macular degeneration and for inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. With this work brought the first ocular gene therapy trials to the University of California San Diego which have screened and treated patients from various parts of the world.
Dr. Borooah also leads a laboratory developing novel therapies for macular degenerations and inherited macular disease. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, successfully developing a model of macular degeneration in a dish using patient stem cells. Recent research successes include the demonstration of long-term retinal rescue using gene therapy in a model of childhood inherited retinal disease and detailed understanding of interactions between the immune system and the retina in disease. His research accomplishments have been honored with multiple prestigious awards including a Rowling scholarship for translational medicine, a Foundation Fighting Blindness career development award and a Fulbright scholarship.
